Description

Be sure type click on the animation in version B to see 61 Cygni to see its motion over just one years time!

61 Cygni is a true double star only 11.4 light years away from us. They are nearly identical K stars (somewhat dimmer than our sun) that orbit of 678 years. Because they are so close to us, they have a high proper motion of 5.28 arc seconds per year. This is fast enough to be seen visually with a telescope over just 6 months and easily detected over a full year. Version A is a single color corrected image, while version B is an animation showing the movement from 2020-06-19 to 2021-07-03! When I measured the motion in my images, I calculated a proper motion of 5.12 arc seconds per year, which is pretty close to the currently measured value.

Each image was a live stack of 120 x 0.5 second exposures (to maximize positional accuracy and minimize sensor saturation).
