Description

Cygnus X-1 is a well-researched source of X-rays; the first one known as coming from a black hole. This is  the brighter of the two stars in the center of the picture. It belongs to the system a high-mass double about 6,100 light-years distant in the constellation Cygnus, and includes a blue supergiant orbiting a black hole. Its emits a pair of relativistic jets of energy perpendicular to the black hole's accretion disk. These jets generate a radiation wave traveling at speeds> 100 km / s. Curved shock structure shown in the image is the result of the interaction of this jet with a dense interstellar medium.
It is not a planetary nebula or supernova remnant. The scientists measured x-ray bursts occurring on a split-second timescale, which they say is consistent with material falling into the black hole. Cygnus X-1 is referred to as a microcquasar.
