Description

I didn't expect this.

Since doing a Foraxx SHO image of this region last year, and being really blown away by the extent of the Ha gas around M42 and the Running Man. nebuelae, I thought I might download some data  taken with the Aus-2 platform at TL to double the focal length, getting a little more detail on the bright nebulae while still have some of the wider field Ha gas.

The result surprised me in its depth and colour, highlighting the different ionisation states in the nebulae against the background Ha.   The colours could be seen as a little strong [they are close to my previous 200mm image - with perhaps the blue channel bing a little stronger], but other than a simple arcsinh intensity stretch on the standard SHO Foraxx palette, no saturation correction was applied.   Even applying HDRMT to intensity proved too strong.

The result renders the Running Man nebula more like the Rubber Duck nebula, and the overall colour scheme is perhaps more Jeff Koons than astronomy.  It won't be to everyone's tastes -and maybe not even mine, but I though a different take on an old favourite might be of some interest to my AB friends.  [I have also included the full field image, but I think a tighter crop works better on this one].
