Description

Well, this is the last photo taken with the ASI2600MM before sending it for servicing - the oil leak issue occurred again, and this time I don't have the "mini clean-room" with me. I'm also weary about introducing sensor tilt, as after the previous intervention I see some asymmetries in star shapes.

It's also my first LRGB workflow, and the images were taken during a night which was forecasted as clear, but Murphy intervened, so I had to hunt holes in clouds, resulting in 5-10 images per channel. It was also my first full workflow using N.I.N.A., ASCOM Drivers and Stellarium for controlling the setup (instead of the usual ASIAir).

I also noticed a pattern where I capture the images, calibrate and process them, but then I'm not happy with the results compared with other photos of the same target and give up posting them. However, astrophotography has a steep learning curve and there is no way I can efficiently improve without some constructive feedback... so why not share some thoughts as well?

Lessons learned:
- shooting with frequent filter rotation yields a better chance to obtain _some_ useful images when shooting between clouds (5xR,5xG,5xB,5xL and repeat, instead of shooting with same filter and then passing to the next)
- using N.I.N.A. as shooting platform is significantly more complex than using ASIAir, but also the level of control is orders of magnitude higher. Examples: sensor cool-down / warm-up time ramps, filter focus offsets, Bahtinov mask focus assist, flat wizard with target ADU, weather station / dome / rotator support, as well as it's nice to have the images on the PC instantly
- images taken with a sensor having an oil leak can still be useful (depending on the oil stain extent end location)
- taking LRGB frames from light polluted skies isn't so terrible as I once thought; effective background extraction is a critical step though

To improve:
- plate solve sky model precision was 30 arcmin off - might be an issue with the RA/Dec standard used by the mount
- auto-focus routine is always failing - will play more with the step config once I have the camera back
- had issues with LRGBCombination process after LinearFit - the stars were very color-saturated, so I had to combine the channels after MaskedStretch, and as such the PCC had issues finding stars.
- convince upstairs neighbours not to throw beer on my telescope )
