Description

It has been a terrible year for imaging.  First we had the Saharan Dust Layer; then an active hurricane season, tropical waves, troughs, etc.  kept our skies cloudy for most of the year.  Finally on late November we had a 2 week weather window and I tried to make the best out of it.

My backyard is full of obstructions and I can only image objects of northern declination and many of them only until they reach the meridian.  The San Juan metropolitan area is north to where I live and its light pollution complicates things even more.

I've always wanted to image Melotte 15.  I knew it was going to be hard because:  (1) it rises only 46 degrees in the sky,  (2) it is located in the area where light pollution is the strongest, and  (3) it "hides" behind a palm tree after the meridian flip.   In spite of all this, I gave it a try and hoped for the best.   I have to say that I was expecting it to be a lot brighter than it came out.   Still I like the result I got.  I hope the weather improves soon so I can add 6 more hours and RGB stars.  Until then, here it is....

Title: Melotte 15 - Full Reprocess

Description: I decided to reprocess this image using starless images as a starting point. I had tried that technique before using Starnet++ but in this case the masters I got were so full of leftover artifacts that I gave up and processed it without removing the stars. I was pretty sure I could do better....Recently I purchased Russ Croman's Star Exterminator and I gave it a try with this image. I have to say I was super impressed with the result. By using masters without stars I think I was able to lot more of the dust cloud that surrounds that star cluster. I regret I don't have any RGB stars to replace the narrowband ones, therefore I tried to add color by trying different narrowband mixes. I hope you like this version as much as I do now.
