Description

I hauled my SCT out to image this dark, dusty icon, against a bright backdrop of ionised hydrogen emissions, under the full moon.

I’d forgotten how much work is involved in getting this old scope  ready. Despite a bright, sometimes hazy night, I was pleased to get an RMS 1.25”  with my homemade ST4 guider.

2.5 hours data (5min subs) is sufficient to draw out some detail at f3.3 using a 7nm Baader Ha filter, despite the bright night.

Barnard 33 is a dark nebula bubbling up in front of curtains of hydrogen (IC 434) ionised by the intense UV irradiation coming from Alnitak in Orion’s Belt.

We’ve enjoyed some lovely winter sunsets in the last few days (revisions); The fringe of the horse head, has a soft glow, spectacular in deep large aperture images, reminiscent of sunlit clouds.

Title: Combined data - processed in Nebulosity v4

Description: I'm always amazed what simple levels and curves can achieve. Nebulosity has basic processing tools, which I always feel provide a more natural look.It lacks the intelligent tools such as deconvolution and HDR, and post-processing cosmetic tools. basic star tightening, a little unsharp masking, a 3x3 pixel blur and noise reduction have been applied. It doesn't de-warp the stars or remove the strange anti-blooming artifact that I get on bright stars with this 2005 era CCD mono camera.

Title: A stereo 3D version

Description: Developed in Startools. If you like a challenge - relax your eyes and move the image close to your eyes until you see 3 images, them move it slowly out, concentrate on the middle image, allowing your eyes to cross 👀, until it pops into focus - you'll get a nice 3D effect. PS do T stare too long or you’ll get a headache 🤕.
