Description

NGC 7635, the Bubble Nebula, aka Sharpless 162, in Cassiopeia, formed by stellar wind from its young, intensely hot central star, 45 times the mass of the sun. Only 4 million years old, the star has already lost most of its hydrogen and is fusing helium into heavier elements, according to NASA’s Hubblesite, which notes that it’s destined to go supernova sometime in the next 10 to 20 million years.

It’s the bright, off-center star near the top of the bubble.

Imaged 2 & 8 August 2011, processed in December 2019. NGC 7635 is 7 light-years across and 7,100 light-years distant.

At the far center left is the rarely imaged planetary nebula KjPn 8. It appears as a strikingly red star surrounded by a faint, oval nebular rim. See labeled image (blue line is North, green is east.)

KjPn 8 is an extraordinary, multi-polar tubular planetary nebula measuring 14’ x 4.’ Some 5,200 light-years distant, it was imaged by Hubble in 2000. Research by J. Lopez of UNAM Mexico and colleagues shows that KjPN 8 formed from “spasmodic bipolar ejections over thousands of years” in changing directions, probably involving two distinct planetary-nebula-like events associated with a binary star, each with similar mass.

Hubble revealed the compact nebular core of the central star to be an elliptical ring approximately 500 years old. [03 Jan 2000 arXiv Astrophysics, Cornell University]
