Description

Thor’s Helmet Nebula aka NGC 2359, is an emission nebula (A nebula formed of ionized gases that emit light of various wavelengths) located in the constellation Canis Major, the Great Dog. With its round shape and wing-like filamentary structures, this visually stunning nebula bears a striking resemblance to the helmet worn into battle by Thor, the well-known Norse god of thunder.

Thor’s Helmet spans a staggering 30 lightyears across, making it more than 10 times larger than our entire solar system. It lies approximately 3,670 parsecs (11.96 thousand lightyears) away from Earth. It contains several hundred solar masses, At its core is WR7, an extremely hot Wolf-Rayet star (Rare, super-bright stars that exhibit a large burst of activity before they die) thought to be over 280,000 times brighter than our Sun and 16 times more massive.

Wolf-Rayet stars are evolved, exceptionally hot and luminous stars in the last stage of their life, that are rapidly losing mass as a result of a strong, high-speed stellar wind. The speed of WR 7’s stellar wind is estimated at 1,545 km/s. The star will end its life as a brilliant supernova in the relatively near future.

Taken in narrowband and processed as HOO, Hydrogen-Oxygen-Oxygen palette. This was towards the south and i had no idea it was visible to me until last week. This also came out pretty good, so i'm making prints of it. PM me if interested. Comments welcomed! Enjoy!
