Description

The beauty and detail of the Silver Sliver Galaxy make it a popular first target for many amateur and professional telescopes.  At 30M ly distance and with a size, and shape similar to the Milky Way Galaxy, it gives us a similar view of what our home looks like edge on.  The dust lanes are pronounced and include intricate axial elements that many believe are caused by massive supernovae ejecting the material from the main disk.  The lighter white areas visible resolve in larger telescopes as groups of foreground stars.  The region around it is peppered with distant galaxies, 200Mly, 500Mly and further.  Many of which look like small dots in this image but resolve into the characteristic diamond shape of a galaxy in larger telescopes.
