Description

This picture is a beautiful frame of the central part of the constellation of Orion.
On the left side there's the vast active region of H II called IC 434. This is a very large star forming region. In front of it is the very small, yet peculiar, dark nebula known as Barnard 33 (or Horsehead Nebula).
Still on the left side (very far left) is the bright white nebula known as the Flame Nebula. Identified as NGC 2024 this nebula is about 1350 light years away. The bright part of this nebula re-emits part of the energy received from the nearby stars under the form of visible light and it's partly hiding behind part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex that forms the dark nebulae in that region.
The bright star between the white flame nebula and the red IC 434 is Alnitak. This is the left star of the Orion belt. Part of the light shine of Alnilam, the central star of the Orion belt, can be seen on the very top/left edge of the picture (just outside the frame).

On the right side of the picture is the very bright Great Orion Nebula also known as Messier 42. This is one of the brightest nebulae in the sky and very well visible by naked eye. A lot of details of this nebula can be recognized through a small, amatorial, telescope.
The nebula is lit by four massive stars that form the Trapezium Cluster in the heart of that nebula. Those stars emits a huge amount of UV light and other high energy photons that ionized the central part of the nebula. The heart of this nebula is so bright, compared to the rest of the nebula, that it is saturated white in this picture.
To the left of the Great Orion Nebula is the very blue "Running Man" Nebula also known as Sh2-279.

In the faint background of the picture there's some hint of part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex that extends through the several nebulae present in the area.
