Description

The Heart and Soul Nebula are massive star forming regions in the constellation of Cassiopeia in the Perseus arm of the Milky Way galaxy.  They are about 7000 light years from our solar system.  The Heart Nebula is on the top right, Soul nebula bottom left. The area including both nebula is around 580 light years across.

Most of the stars in this region are relatively young (in the millions of years).  Considering our Sun is around 5 billion years these stars and their solar systems would be very young.

You can also faintly see a couple of galaxies Maffei 1 and Maffei 2 below and between the two.  These galaxies are much further away at around 10 million light years well outside of the Milky Way but relatively close in terms of galactic distances.
