Description

IC5070 (The Pelican Nebula), is a star-forming region about 30 light years wide and located 1,800 light years from Earth. IC5070 is an emission nebula and is found near the bright star Deneb in the constellation of Cygnus the swan.

According to Greek mythology, Cygnus, grieving for his drowned friend Phaethon, spent days diving into the river Eridanus to collect Phaethon's bones to give him a proper burial. The gods were so touched by Cygnus's devotion, that they turned him into a swan and placed him among the stars.
