Description

A detailed view of the core and inner disk of M31 showing dust lanes tracing the inner spiral structure and going all the way to the galaxy core. These dust structures are usually lost in the glow of the bright inner disk and bulge of M31. Also seen in the image is the Hubble's Cepheid Variable (M31-V1) - the Cepheid variable star that was discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1923 (see Revision B). Hubble used that star to show M31 lies far outside the Milky Way, proving it had to be another galaxy and expanding the limits of the known Universe. 

This image is a combination of a series of short 20 s RGB exposures taken to reveal the elusive dust structures in the core of M31. The RGB data taken with the 250mm f/4 Lacerta PhotoNewton and ZWO ASI294MM Pro camera over a few hours on November 5, 2023.

R: 150x20s (Gain 200, bin 1x1)
G: 103x20s (Gain 200, bin 1x1)
B: 121x20s (Gain 200, bin 1x1)

Total exposure: 2.1 hours
