Description

This is a challenging enough target and seeing conditions have been less than optimal.  My initial data was on the 7th, but I had to wait a week for clear skies.  Unfortunately it has been pretty windy, with intermittent clouds, so I had to delete several images.  Plus the dust and pollen remain really high, each morning my mount and lens would just be covered in dust.  Anyway, I think I ended up with a decent image.  The core colors and detail actually look pretty similar to the image from my Sky Safari app. so I was pleased with that.

I did find it fun to zoom in on this image and find all the various other galaxies and there are several.

M106 was discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1781, but was not added to Messier's catalog until 1947.  This is a large Sb spiral galaxy tilted 25 degrees to our line of sight.  This orientation is believed to be why its dust lanes are so prominent.
