Description

I went to image M 57 (The Ring Nebula) at f/10 and while processing I noticed a little whirly smudge below it. Turns out it's IC 1296, a face-on barred-spiral galaxy! I love when you unexpectedly capture these distant background galaxies in your pictures. IC 1296 is 220 million light-years away! M 57 is merely 2300 ly.m The blue color comes from doubly-ionized oxygen (the so-called "forbidden lines"). The red colors come mostly from H but also from double-ionized N. I also processed this using a 2x drizzle in DSS.
