Description

This is an image of M81, or Bode Galaxy (an spiral galaxy) and M82, or Cigar Galaxy (an starburst galaxy). This distances to earth are approximately 9 Mly and 12 Mly. They are a very

popular target for amateur astronomers. When you perform a deep exposure and a careful processing, we can discover they are surrounded by clouds of dust.

Those clouds lie in our galaxy but in a high galactic latitude. They are illuminated not by a single star (as most nebula in the plane of the Galaxy are) but by the energy from the integrated flux of all the stars in the Milky Way. So, they are named as Integrated Flux Nebula, or IFN.
