Description

A photo from Namibia with more of a souvenir character than a serious picture.

NGC 6872, known as the "Condor Galaxy," is an intriguing object located in the constellation of Pavo. It is relatively distant, nearly 212 million light-years away from Earth. This spectacular barred spiral galaxy is considered the longest spiral galaxy known to us. This is the result of a collision with another galaxy, which led to a strong stretching and elongation of its spiral arms. The distance from one end to the other is approximately 530,000 light-years, visually spanning over 7 arc minutes in the sky. The galaxy is accompanied by a smaller, interacting galaxy IC 4970 (just above the center). It was discovered on June 27, 1835, by the English astronomer John Herschel.
