Description

NGC 1291 is classified as a ring galaxy with an odd inner bar.  I presume that the bar is the very small bar in the brightest part of the core.  That part of the core appears to be rotating in the same near face on plane as the outer ring.  But in area surrounding that barred core it appears that there is significant material rotating at angle inclined maybe 45 degrees off of face on.  This dusty looking area is marked by dust lanes circling the core and appears slightly flattened compared to the core and the outer ring.

The galaxy lies 33 million ly distant and has an apparent size of about 10 arc minutes.  Color variation is quite limited with only the wisps of the ring showing the blue I expect with young stars.  In general the color of the galaxy resembles dust as much as stars.  However there are quite a number of small, colorful background galaxies to keep things visually interesting.

I shot about 7 hours of Ha data but it contributed almost nothing after continuum subtraction.  Assuming I was likely to be adding more noise than Ha signal, I left it out.

My RGB data was similar in sharpness to my Luminance.  To get as much data as I could on the core I created a SuperLuminance with my RGB and L masters.  This lifted SNR significantly.

I updated my Pixinsight version to the latest version before processing this.  For the first time in a while I was having trouble the satellite and airplane trails not completely rejecting.  With one bright plane trail I decided to go old school rather than reject the whole sub.  Back in the CCDStack days, you could paint your own rejection on part of a sub you wanted rejected.  So I used the clone stamp to paint the plane trail 100% white with a sharp edge so that it would fully reject.  Worked like a charm!   But if you have advice on getting rejection back to where it was in the previous release let me know!
