Description

This is galaxy is often imaged with NGC5908, but here I zoomed in on NGC5905 by itself as its quite a pretty barred spiral.

I didn't realize it was so far away until I did some additional research. As its a pretty unwound barred spiral it spreads out a lot and has a very large diffuse disk, which was one of the things I worked on capturing here. It turns out that its on the huge side for a spiral galaxy at 200 x 300 thousand light years. Probably not too hefty though since there is lots of empty space in the faint diffuse regions of the galaxy. The core is a bright AGN (so it has an active, feeding, supermassive black hole) with dust lanes surrounding it and threading down the bar. Lots of star forming in the bright knotted arms too. It really gives the impression of water flowing down a drain - which might not be too far from the actually situation here!

Its little friend to the lower right is PGC 2504296, is yet another barred spiral about 6 times further away. It appears to be physically smaller, maybe half the size of NGC 5905.

One thing I noticed while prowling carefully through the image is the little compact galaxy cluster SDSSCGB 42645 a little above and to the left of NGC 5905. The brightest member is also catalogued as a quasar, but it has a reddish fuzziness around it, do it is thought to be a member of the cluster, which is about 3 billion light years away!
