Description

Located about 550 light-years distant in Cassiopeia, this 10 light-year wide molecular cloud of hydrogen is absorbing energy from Gamma Cassiopeia (not visible in the image, but implied by reflected light off dust grains in the broader region  above the image).  Gamma's intense ultraviolet radiation is sculpting the cloud, eroding it while facilitating star forming.   IC 63 is the bright red emission nebula, while IC 59 is the blue reflection nebula below.    Gamma Cass is quite spectacular in its own right, radiating 35,000 times more than our sun.  It contains ~17 times the sun's mass, and rotates at a rate of ~430km/s, which is ~235 times our sun's rotation rate, producing a distinct bulge.
