Description

The designation IC 1848 is widely used to refer to the Soul Nebula. However, technically, this designation refers only to the open cluster that lies at the heart of the nebula. Since the entire Soul Nebula does not fit into the field of view of my camera, I decided to shoot an image that highlights the cluster, and that depicts the nebula as framing the cluster.

A recently published photometric study of IC 1848 found the cluster to lie about 7200 light years away. It also found that most of its member stars are exceedingly young, only about 3 to 5 million years old.
