Description

This is not a particularly scintillating shot. I shot a couple of hours of luminance and Ha to see whether there was anything more interesting in the field, but that didn't turn up any hints that there might be. So I called this one done--my 81st Messier object. 29 to go!

There are, actually, a couple of items of note regarding this cluster 610 light years away in Cancer sporting around 1,000 stars. In 2012, the Kepler space telescope found the first two exoplanets orbiting sun-like stars in a cluster in the Beehive. Exoplanets had been spotted in open clusters before, but not orbiting sun-ish stars. They both turn out to be hot Jupiters. The other thing worth mentioning is that the largest stars in the cluster have moved to the center of the cluster due to gravitational interaction.
