A Nebulosa Dumbbell, conhecida como M27, teve a honra de ser a primeira nebulosa planetária a ser descoberta, e sua visualização pioneira foi realizada pelo renomado astrônomo francês Charles Messier em 12 de julho de 1764. Em suas anotações, Messier descreveu este intrigante objeto celeste como uma nebulosa oval desprovida de estrelas. No entanto, foi o astrônomo John Herschel que, posteriormente, apelidou-a carinhosamente de "Dumbbell" (haltere em inglês), fazendo uma comparação curiosa à sua forma, que lembrava "uma marca de dois tiros próximos".

Esse histórico nome conferido por Herschel adicionou uma camada de poesia ao já fascinante universo da M27 e, desde então, esta nebulosa planetária continua a nos encantar e intrigar com seus segredos cósmicos e beleza singular.

The Dumbbell Nebula, known as M27, had the honor of being the first planetary nebula to be discovered, with its pioneering observation conducted by the renowned French astronomer Charles Messier on July 12, 1764. In his notes, Messier described this intriguing celestial object as an oval nebula devoid of stars. However, it was the eminent astronomer John Herschel who affectionately nicknamed it the "Dumbbell," making an interesting comparison to its shape, which resembled "a pair of close-together shots".

This historical name bestowed by Herschel added a poetic layer to the already fascinating universe of M27, and since then, this planetary nebula continues to enchant and intrigue us with its cosmic secrets and unique beauty.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
