Fist light with my new 8" Newtonian. Never tried to image with a Newtonian before.

Have had a lot of problems with this scope. Had to get the secondary replaced because the spider was badly mangled. Even now with a new secondary, problems abound. The stars at the center of the field are distorted while towards the edge show bad coma. I believe the former issue is because the secondary is not positioned correctly in the OTA and this in turn is because the draw tube is not angled correctly. Bare in mind this is after laser collimation. I can see that the laser spot is not centered on the secondary and I therefore conclude the draw tube is not perfectly radial.

Hopefully I can solve the latter issue by correctly positioning the coma corrector wrt to the camera.

With all the problems I gave up trying to calibrate and just stacked the raw subs. I will say I'm impressed at the light grasp compared with my little 3" apo.

Any advice very welcome of course.

Also discovered most of my images have disappeared. Certainly no great loss to the astrophotography community but a bit shocking nevertheless. Being disorganized I've probably lost many of the originals.

And naturally the clouds are rolling in again tonight... Not sure what I've done to deserve all of this.

Edit: I continue to be impressed at the EQ6 - no problem handling this large scope and unguided at that.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
