Description

This is a narrowband image of M57 using the Hubble pallette (SII - H-α - OIII mapped to RGB respectively).

The image is dominated by H-α and OIII. The presence of the SII signal is discernible as a small amount of red around the periphery of the ring.

The Ring is about 2,500 light years distant and at about a  light-year in diameter it appears very small - only about 1.5 arc minutes across for the bright inner part. The 15th-magnitude central star was not discovered until over a century after Messier found the main nebula, and is notoriously diffiicult to see visually in anything less than a 12-inch telescope.
