Description

This is the Cygnus Wall, a highly concentrated area of star formation in the North American Nebula roughly where Mexico would be. This feature is estimated to be 1600ly from Earth and stretch about 20ly across. This emission nebula is ionized by a very hot star obscured behind the dark nebula where the Gulf of Mexico would be. This is one I really enjoy zooming into and admiring the detail along the edge of the "wall" and the dark nebula throughout.

This image is in the SHO pallette and I processed it in a slightly different workflow than my other SHO images. I usually struggle to balance the overly green hues from the H-Alpha channel and I feel like this helped.

Workflow
  • GraXpert - I usually start with DBE to remove gradients but I am always concerned that I am removing nebula when I do this on an image with the nebula throughout. I think GraXpert did a good job and it was a bit easy to use than DBE.
  • PixInsight
    • PSFRender - For each channel to get PSF size
    • BlurXterminator - For each channel with manual PSF from previous step
    • NoiseXterminator - For each channel
    • StarXterminator- For each channel to work with starless images for stretching
    • LinearFit - To get the Sii and Oiii channels close to the Ha channel
    • ChannelCombination - For narrow band I would usually do this after stretching, but I decided to try this while linear and see how it went, I think this and the LinearFit helped with my green problem.
    • GeneralizedHyperbolicStretch - A few round of this with different SP values to bring the background up.
    • GeneralizedHyperbolicStretch w/ Sii Mask - I found that the Sii channel had a lot of the wall structure so I made a mask out of that and stretched the wall some more to make it pop.
    • CurveTransformation - Minor curves adjustments
    • Stars - channel comination and lowered saturation to remove the ugly SHO colors from the star image (I apparently forgot to shoot RGB stars for this image).

  • Photoshop - Apply some Camera Raw Filter for final touches, screen stars layer, export images.
