Description

The blood moon photographed near totality from upstate New York. On the east coast of the US the sun had already come up before the eclipse reached totality, and from my location the moon had gone behind the mountain behind my house before totality. This shot is a single exposure with a SONY A57 DSLR and a William Optics ZS73. It's counter intuitive to shoot a 15 second exposure of the moon, but that's what this is at ISO 100. I'm very used to shooting deep sky objects with nearly complete automation.  It was refreshing to slew to a star, manually focus with a bahtinov mask as opposed to autofocus, then slew to the moon and shoot with the DSLR. No intervalometer used, I just set a 2 second delay after pressing the shutter button.
