Description

The Bubble Nebula is photobombed by M52. I wasn't sure I was going to like this framing but thanks to the gas extending to the edge of the frame, it made it all work out.

We had a rare stretch of five clear nights here in Virginia so of course, circumstances kept me from taking advantage of the first two but I did manage the last three. I wanted a target I could devote a good chunk. of the night two and it needed to be away from the still bright moon. When I looked at the possibilities there weren't a lot of choices. I had done the Bubble before on the SRO scope but this would be wider field and when I look back at that older version (which had some data problems as we were still learning how to use that CCD camera properly), I much prefer this version though I've learned more about processing since then so maybe I should reprocess that old data to give it a fair chance.

As it turned out, I liked this a lot. Though the Bubble is relatively small there's.a lot going on around it!!

Processing:

Each S, H and O:
blurXterminator
starXterminator
noiseXterminator
GHS (GH, linear, GH)

stars:
channel combination (SHO)
GHS (GH)

SHO:
channel combination (SHO)
histogram transformation (to align peaks and further stretch data)
SCNR (maximum mask)
noiseXterminator (those big stretches brought out a bit too much noise in the dark areas
LHE
MLT (mild sharpening)
pixel math in stars (screen)
