Description

NGC2419 is a dim cluster (mag 9.1) in the constellation Lynx and one of the most remote globulars of our Milky Way.  It lies 300,000 light-years away from the Sun and about the same distance from our galaxy's center.  This is twice as far out as the Large Magellanic Cloud.  At this distance, it takes a staggering 3 billion years to make one trip around the galaxy!

Being dim and very distant, I was hoping for hours of data but the bad weather has beaten me down.  It is not as brillant looking as M13 but at least I got a glimpse of the curious beauty.

Interesting Facts:
  • The nickname "Intergalactic Wanderer" was bestowed upon it when NGC2419 was erroneously believed not to be in orbit around the Milky Way.
  • Astronomer Leos Ondra has noted that NGC 2419 would be the "best and brightest" for any observers in the Andromeda Galaxy.
