Description

Abell 33 is a planetary nebula in Hydra and is located some 1500 light years away.  The bright star along the edge is HD 83535 - magnitude 7.2 and some 700 light years closer than Abell 33 - giving the nebula its “diamond ring” effect.  The remnant of Abell 33's central progenitor star is still bright and more luminous than our own Sun.  The central star appears to be double, but it is not known if this is a real association or just a chance alignment.

While there is a component of Ha, OIII is significantly brighter giving the nebula its bluish color.  See revisions for relative stacked images of Ha and OIII.

Also included is a closeup of the central star region showing the "double star" - this is much sharper than normal due to an aggressive pre-stretch application of BlurXTerminator, but clearly shows both the central components.

Imaged over several nights:  Feb 7-8, 15, 25-26, 2024.
