Description

NGC 2997 is a fine grand design spiral that's located in Antila (the air pump). It's thought to be 30-40 million light years distant. In this image, the core of the galaxy is reddened, with two prominent dust lanes visible. The inner and outer arms show many magenta colored star forming regions. A significant amount of dust and gas follow the main arms.

I captured this image as one of several "low altitude" galaxies visible at the TAAA CAC dark site in southern AZ. The object rises to an altitude angle just less than 27 degrees. It's in a fairly rich field, being not far distant from the main belt of the winter Milky Way.
