Description

I have great new found appreciation for all you who do mosaics!    To the heart of our Milky Way.  Absolutely a fantastic region.  I love the star clouds and dark veins of dust in this area (hence my processing to bring out contrast).   In this mosaic I did capture the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, IC 4715.

This is a 6 panel mosaic using my 9.25HD with Hyperstar shot over 4 short nights at Mt Pinos.  I have to admit I like the stars better with a refractor than with this SCT.  Next year I'll go after again with my WO81GT.  I actually have 9 panels, but one did not come out.  I tried to recapture from my backyard, but since over LA's light dome and low, no success.   These 3 missing panels contain the Large Sagittarius Star Cloud.  I may be able to capture the 9th panel on the coming new moon...or wait till next year with the refractor.  Also, I did have a collimation issue with the 9.25HD in these panels.  With overlaps some of the one corner star issues have been improved.  I tried for several hours each night at Pinos to manually adjust collimation using a tri-bahtinov mask, but never was quite good enough.  I just bought the Hotech laser collimator for SCT Hyperstar and will finally get to working on that today.

IC4715, also known as the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, is a large naked eye expanse of stars, clusters, nebulosity and other objects located in Sagittarius. At mag. +2.5 and covering 1.5 degrees of sky, it's visible to the naked eye as a large detached part of the Milky Way.  It's claimed that it has the densest concentration of individual stars visible in a single binocular field of view.
