This nebula which I saw images of decades ago is so beautiful and intriguing. I was eager to see it thru a 16 inch dob 25 years ago and was glad to see the distinctive tri-sections but disappointed with no color and little detail. To photograph this now and see all the color and distinctive dust clouds has been a pleasure. I have a lot to learn about working with stars. I tried to use a star reduction action but the result was not as good as I had hoped for so dropped it.

To avoid distorting the stars too much, (of course they are not particular good to begin with), I masked just the nebula and worked with exposure, saturation and color balance.

Description: Reprocessed from original fit file. Separated stars from nebula. Worked with nebula first. Fewer adjustments with nebula produced slightly different color balance. Worked with the stars separately but primarily just reducing star size. Original acquisition produced coma that I did not correct here. Looking for a Photoshop plugin that might correct coma across the image rather than having to do it individually. I have seen some suggestions using optic options, but did not try here.

In any case the stars are much better than previous image.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
