Description

LDN1622 The Boogeyman Nebula in HaLRGB

Cropped from the full-frame FOV. Celestron's focal reducer for the C9.25HD seems to have trouble with star quality in the corners with a full-frame sensor, although James Lamb's excellent YouTube videos suggest I need to run some tests as he did to find a more ideal backfocus than the number stated in the manual. BXT running with its v4 AI did a nice job dealing with much of this.

I tried stretches with PixInsight's HistogramTransformation, MaskedStretch, and ArcsinhStretch.  The latter did a nice job with colors and retaining dim dusty details but had poor star quality vs. the MS stretch. The MS stars appear in this hybrid render.

The seeing wasn't ideal due to humidity, so I down-scaled this rendering until PixInsight reported that the final displayed FWHM is about 3 pixels, to regain apparent sharpness.

Careful 3-point polar alignment via N.I.N.A. with the mount running at King rate resulted in almost no PhD2 corrections during exposures; guiding RMS error was about .75 pix. Dithered. I'd wanted to turn off guiding for the shorter exposures, but this would have disabled dithering.

Ha stack exposure camera gain 200; others 100.

The optical path and filter set were very clean, so as a time-saver I created afternoon Lum-only skyflats at gains 100 and 200 through a white microfiber cloth, using these as applicable for the other filter stacks. This worked out just fine.
