Description

These 2 dark nebulae, Barnard 142 and Barnard 143, are commonly referred to as Barnard's E for the obvious visual reason as well as to represent Edward Emerson Barnard's initials. His catalog contains numerous dark nebulae in addition to these. A dark nebula is made up of cold, dense clouds of gas that block the light of stars behind them, as can be plainly seen here. Set against this super dense starfield containing various colored stars, it showcases countless stars in this section of the milky way galaxy. It is estimated about 2000 light years away in the constellation Aquila, and is about the same width as the full moon.
