Description

There is always the question when taking a trial on the California nebula: how can one get an image together that satisfies? In general, I think that NGC 1499 does not provide any super special features (not that I think that it is boring, just the opposite 😊), but it usually does not provide the "wow" effect as other targets (which is fine!).
I see a lot of images here on Astrobin that have a lot of OIII surrounding the main part of the nebula, well ... I clearly can say that with 120s exposure time and under my sky conditions this is not present at all. There was maybe a glimpse of OIII visible on the subs, very much out shined by the other channels. I added as well Hß data to potentially grasp some of the "blue" spectrum, but it turned out that it adds just more to the main nebula and not the surroundings. Nevertheless, I added it 😊. The B channel is a combination of OIII, Hß and the B data. That was actually interesting, the B channel revealed more of the surrounding area than the narrowband filters. Stars were made with an added layer of RGB images.
I chose NGC 1499 since it fits with my reducer on the FLT132 perfectly. Line it up from "southwest" to "northeast" and yep, got almost all of it into the frame.
I switched between the sessions in my setup, the first images were done with the filter wheel, the next ones with the M48 filter drawer, and the last ones with the M54 filter drawer. I expected better corners with the M54 filter drawer, but well ... with some thinking before I even tried it was clear that this will not help much since the filters are M48, and they are now the decisive part of those dark corners. With all this switching, the edges of the image are not perfect, one can see this clearly when zooming into those areas. I am still not 100% dialed in with the back focus distance, but the last images come very close.
The final color assignment was for me the most pleasing one, well, maybe because I am a fan of the "classic" SHO Hubble palette. I found it interesting that areas of gold and red intertwine a lot, did not expect this. 
Version F shows a closeup of the most interesting part of NGC 1499, revealing the nice "mountains" of gas with some little "caves" as well, pretty cool.
As with almost all the "wide field" images with the reducer it pays off to look at the full resolution image, the details that the 6200 can capture in such a wide field is just wonderful, I really love this camera 😊.
