Description

I am nothing if not a glutton for punishment. I repeatedly choose to image dim emission nebulae with my stock, unmodified Nikon D5300, despite the fact that I know that by doing so, I am fating myself to a long, arduous slog of processing, with no guarantee that the final product will be anything other than a mediocre image. I subjected myself to this tom-foolery once again earlier this week, having picked as a target NGC 1491, a rather dim emission nebula in the constellation Perseus.

NGC 1491 is, in fact, the brightest portion of the larger emission nebula LBN 705. The main source of the nebula's illumination is the moderately bright star located in the "hollow" interior of NGC 1491. The radiation from this star is eroding the surrounding gas, creating NGC 1491's distinctive arrow-like structure. LBN 705 is located about 10,000 light years from Earth.

Two other interesting objects are included within the field of view of this image. At the upper right is open cluster King 7, which also has an arrow-like shape. Located closer to us than LBN 705, King 7 lies somewhere between 5, 500 and 8,500 light years away.

A bit below and to the left of King 7 in the image is reflection nebula GM 1-34. This object is listed in the Gyulbudaghian+Maghakian catalog of reflection nebula containing Herbig-Haro flows.

A final word--the madness may soon be ending. As a 70th birthday present to myself, I will likely be sending my camera off to be modded this spring. That is, unless a sudden wave of masochism overwhelms me between now and then.
