      Description

The interacting galaxies Arp 273 were once labeled by Hubble astronomers and imagers as a Galactic Rose.  At an approximate distance of 350 million light years, it is one of the most distant galaxy pairs I have tried to image with some detail. UGC 1813, the smaller of the two galaxies, is believed to have passed through or pierced its larger neighbor, UGC 1810.  1810 has 5x’s the mass of 1813. This cosmic collision appears to have stimulated an increase in star production in both galaxies.

This galactic pairing is reminiscent of a flower. Longfellow reminds us of the beauty that lies above us…
“Silently, one by one, in the infinite meadows of heaven, blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of the angels”. (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie)
