Description

1078 Mentha was rediscovered by astronomer Karl Reinmuth on 7th December 1926.  Orbital analysis in 1958 showed that it had previously been designated 864 Aase after discovery on 13 February 1917 by Max Wolf and subsequently lost.

1078 Mentha is a rocky asteroid just 13km in diameter from the inner asteroid belt.  It orbits the Sun between Mars and Jupiter once every 1,249 days with a rotation period of 85 hours.

I noticed the asteroid on 20 x 240sec Lum subexposures of the Helix Nebula (NGC7293) taken over 2 hours on the night of 2021-09-01.  I used ASTAP to identify it. RevisionA is full size (for those with high speed internet), while RevisionB has been scaled x0.25.
