This first colour image of the probable planetary nebula StDr33 (PNG 201.6+03.9) shows a bright ring-shaped structure surrounding a whitish central star.

The central star is probably a close binary system in which two stars orbit each other. This is likely also the reason why the central star does not have the typical blue colour, as the spectral colours of both stars mix to a white-yellow.

The interaction between these two stars has formed the ring structure. The nebula is located approximately 4000 light years away from Earth in the constellation Monoceros. The PN candidate was discovered by the German-French amateur astronomer team Marcel Drechsler and Xavier Strottner in 2020.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
