Description

Abell 85  (also known as LBN 576 and CTB 1)  is a very faint Supernova Remnant lying almost 10,000 light years and about 10,000 years old, across Lynx and Cassiopea constellations. It was thought to be a planetary nebula but recent studies confirm it to be a supernova remnant (SNR), the closest one known to us. Supernova remnants result from the explosion of a star in a supernova and are bounded by an expanding shock wave.

This object is pretty faint and needs some deep integrations to show some detail, I was well prepared before start photographing,I used a Sky-Watcher Quattro 200P/F4 newtonian which has a good exposure efficiency, and a narrow-band filter with 3nm bandwidth is used to highlight the contrast of the nebula body.

The winter weather at the remote observatory is very good, with a high rate of clear skys, good air quality and high air transparency, so I had plenty of opportunities to do something. I spent almost half a month in November last year to accumulate 65 hours of data. With more than thirty hours of exposure per channel,I could see different details of this nebula in both the Ha and O3 channels.
