Description

M1 is obviously the first object, and perhaps one of the most interesting, on Charles Messier's list of things that are not comets. Commonly referred to as the Crab Nebula because in 1840 William Parsons sketched an image of the nebula, which looked somewhat like a crab. The object we observe today is the remnant a supernova recorded by Chinese Astronomers in 1054. At the center of the nebula is a neutron star which is approx 28-30 km's across and spins at a rate of 30 times per second.
