Description

This rarely imaged or studied disturbed spiral galaxy is located 120 million light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +68 degrees. The apparent size of the galaxy to us is 1.6 arc-minutes, which corresponds to a galaxy diameter of 70,000 light years.

The galaxy has fascinating star streams in odd looping patterns around the disk, extending far above and to the right. The total width of the star streams extends beyond 200,000 light years. Star streams are usually the sign of gravitational interaction with another galaxy, but no culprit is visible nearby. Perhaps a companion has already been absorbed.

The galaxy core is obscured by dark dust lanes which cross in front of the core. No distinct arms are present in the outer disk – it just looks like a turbulent mess.

Adding to the craziness, this object has three different NGC numbers - NGC 6667, 6668 and 6678. The edge-on galaxy to the lower right is UGC 11266.
