Description

On the nights of December 08, 11 & 13th 2023, while comet C/2020 V2 (ZTF) was crossing the Grus Triplet of galaxies, the comet was visible as it grazed my southern horizon from June Lake California USA. Using a Celestron C14 in a HyperStar F/2 configuration I captured a sequence of images from each night and animated my results here.

The Field of view for the telescope/camera setup is 1.9 degrees wide by 1.3 degrees tall. The mountain ridge is a little over a mile away and its elevation from the imaging site is 9 degrees in altitude or less. The comet never appeared higher than 10.1 degrees as it passed the meridian.

Thin high clouds can be seen on the first night while the nights were clearer as the days progressed. An interesting sight of the Grus Triplet of galaxies with some intricate details can be seen and the galaxies annotated. Comet C/2020 V2 ZTF was estimated at mid 12th magnitude in brightness as it had past perihelion back in may and its distance, at the time of imaging, was nearly 3.4 a.u.
