Description

After a long break for the southwest monsoon season, I was able to start imaging again in September. This is a "detail" of NGC-7822, 2900 light-years away in Cepheus. The full nebula is probably 3x the size of what's pictured here. I learned a little something new while reading about it. The various "elephant trunk" protuberances are caused by dense clumps of cool gas protecting the gas and dust behind them from being dispersed by the stellar winds of the star powering the emissions from this nebula. That star is just off the right edge of the image, an O-class star with a surface temperature of 45,000K and several orders of magnitude more luminous than our sun.

On my next target, I'm going to experiment with shorter RGB exposures, in hopes of getting better star color and also (especially) mitigating the persistent flare I seem to be getting from my blue filter. I'm debating replacing it altogether.
