Description

Sh2-173 is an ionized HII emission nebula lying 8,800 light-years distant.  It has a diameter of 77 light-years.  Its shape and dark dust clouds bear a resemblance to the mask worn by the Phantom of the Opera.  Hence it is commonly referred to as the Phantom of the Opera Nebula. It contains a large number of young stars and the main ones are responsible for ionizing the hydrogen gas to created the red color.
