Description

M82, the Cigar Galaxy, is a starburst galaxy seen nearly edge-on 12 million light years away in the constellation Ursa Major. The starburst activity is thought to have been caused by an interaction with its neighboring galaxy, M81. Images from Hubble in 2005 have revealed 197 massive star clusters in the starburst core. M82 was first discovered by Johann Bode on December 31, 1774.
