Description

This is my first contribution in quite a while! A particularly intense period of work along with a family emergency kept me from being outside under the sky as much as I would have liked over the past year. It is nice to finally get back to observing on a regular basis!

This image above shows Jupiter and Io as they appeared early in the morning on 19 August 2023. It was captured between a break in the clouds between 4:45 and 5:00 am, when Jupiter was at an altitude of approximately 61 degrees. Transparency was highly variable, and in the end I was only able to capture four 90 s video sequences, each about 2500 frames (of which I stacked the best 50%). However, seeing was excellent, so at least the quality of the data that I was able capture between the breaks in the clouds was reasonably good. The frame rate was approximately 50 fps. Following exposure, I used WinJupPos for de-rotation, and then PhotoShop to complete the final image.

I made two major changes to my setup recently that were used for this image. The first is that I acquired a C11 telescope to replace my C8. In addition, I replaced my color planetary camera (based on the IMX 178 sensor) with the higher frame rate, lower noise IMX 585 color sensor. The upgraded telescope / camera made a notable improvement in image quality.

For some reason, I do very much enjoy the colors of Jupiter's cloud bands this year! I hope you enjoy the image -- wishing everyone who sees this clear skies!
