Description

Reflection nebula NGC 1333 is the most active star-forming region in the Perseus Molecular Cloud. Some of that activity is hinted at by the Herbig-Haro objects that can be seen in the darker nebulosity immediately adjacent to NGC 1333 at its lower right. NGC 1333 is located about 1,000 light years away and spans about 15 light years in diameter.

While it has an integrated magnitude of about 5.6, NGC 1333 actually has a pretty low surface brightness. It is surrounded by the dusty, dark nebulosity of the Perseus Molecular Cloud. Given the constraints imposed by my Bortle 5 skies and my gear, I had pretty low expectations going into this imaging session regarding how much of the dusty, dark stuff I would be able to pull out in my widefield shot of NGC 1333. While I was pleasantly surprised at how much of the dust was, in fact, discernible, it took me almost a week of on-and-off processing to produce a final product that, while aesthetically pleasing--to my eye, at least--did not push the data further than it was willing to go.
