Description

yso.jpg
While reprocessing this image for a coffee table book, I noticed one of the stars in the elephant trunk appeared to have an extra set of diffraction spikes. Looking at all the other stars in the image didn't turn up the same extra spike, therefore I determined this was a real structure! After a quick follow-up search, I determined this to be a known YSO from the Chandra observatory: http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/sim-id?Ident=HD%20239710&NbIdent=1

Paper on YSO's in the region

Young stellar objects are structures originating from the interstellar material around a (you guessed it) young star. They can take on many shapes, some of the common ones being jets, bipolar outflows, protoplanetary discs, and Herbig Haro objects. I believe this one would be an example of a jet. Interestingly this one showed up the strongest in the Sii filter, which is pretty neat!

This image is an interesting reminder that sometimes, not every artifact in your photos are just artifacts!
